Nation, State, and Rule of Law

The main subject of this research essay is about Iran’s problems concerning issues that have made keywords like “nation,” “state,” and “rule of law” problematic. The discussions in this book are not only limited to the history and historical thinking of contemporary political Iran but also consider Iran as a city-state, reflecting on the situation of Greater Cultural Iran throughout its long history. As the author, Javad Tabatabai, has explained in various other essays, Greater Cultural Iran is a country with many complexities and irregularities. Understanding these complexities and irregularities requires a general theory to explain its characteristics. Explaining the regularities in Iran’s history and formulating a theory for it is a novel endeavor in Iranian research, rooted in an awareness of the necessity of such studies—a crisis in Iranian civilization that has deepened in recent decades. Historians of various Iranian intellectual traditions have described these histories and modes of thinking, demonstrating the need for a theory that Javad Tabatabai seeks to discover in “Nation, State, and Rule of Law.” The second edition of this book has been published by Minouyeh Kherad Publishing.
