Countries are the most prominent independent political and geographical divisions of the contemporary world and remain among the most important actors in the international system. Understanding the factors that lead to the emergence and persistence of countries is a subject of political geography, referred to as the cause of existence and cause of survival. The factors of a country’s emergence and survival influence national unity and the formation of an independent identity, becoming the foundations of national identity. Today’s Iran is part of the geography, culture, long-standing history, and people inhabiting the Iranian plateau on the political map of the world. The most notable characteristic of Iran is its diversity in natural phenomena, human factors, and its turbulent historical fate. The question addressed in this work is what has caused the unique name of Iran to take shape alongside this diversity.
