Ends and Beginnings

The book “Al-Isharat wa al-Tanbihat” is a precious philosophical work by the wise Abu Ali Sina, written in several sections. The “sixth section” discusses “ends and beginnings.” Some believe that if God’s action is considered purposeful, it implies neediness. Others argue that if it is not seen as purposeful, it leads to futility and meaninglessness. In the sixth section, the author resolves this dilemma by stating that, given the richness of the necessary existence, the sacred essence of God negates any purpose beyond Himself. God’s purpose is His essence; He is inherently in love with His own essence and consequently in love with His effects and creations.
