Pedestrian is a book written by one of the contemporary authors and literary critics, Balqis Soleimani, which narrates the story of a helpless and lonely woman in the vast city of Tehran. The story in “Pedestrian” revolves around the lives of a Kermani couple named Keramat and Anis, who moved to Tehran after the Islamic Revolution. During this time, Anis, the main character of the story, is pregnant, and Iran is enduring the dreadful years of the war with Iraq. Anis and Keramat have been married for a year and a half, and after migrating to Tehran, Keramat begins attending university. However, over time, his behavior changes. Keramat, now a suspicious and pessimistic man, does not even allow Anis to leave the house. Amidst these circumstances, a man named Houshang is supposed to stay with them as a guest for some time, but his stay extends beyond expected. Anis suffers increasingly due to Keramat’s bizarre behaviors and Houshang’s presence in the house. Soon, the uncertain and unpleasant conditions worsen, and following Keramat’s arrest, Anis, who is carrying his child, finds herself alone in a city overwhelmed by numerous social and political incidents. Balqis Soleimani skillfully advances the captivating narrative of “Pedestrian,” delving into the concerns and struggles of a simple woman who has long lived in poverty and now faces an unexpected situation. The story gradually unveils the layers of emotions and thoughts of Anis.
