Jamal (Hossein) Mirsadegh was born in Tehran in 1933. He graduated from the Faculty of Literature and Humanities at the University of Tehran in Persian literature. Jamal Mirsadegh has had various professions: laborer, teacher, librarian at the Teachers Training College, test design expert at the Administrative and Recruitment Organization, head of ancient documents at the National Archives of Iran, and university lecturer. During his long writing career, he wrote many short and long stories and more than ten novels, some of which have been translated into German, English, Italian, Armenian, Russian, Romanian, Hebrew, Arabic, Hungarian, Hindi, Urdu, and Chinese. He used to take his manuscripts to a quiet and secluded place under an ancient oak tree to write. His pen did not move on the paper; his mind was not working. He would write a few lines and stop. The sentences on the paper lacked spirit, they did not emerge from the depth of his feelings, and were essay-like. Sentences followed one another, word followed word, dry and emotionless, like school exercises.
