The Purple East

Shahriar Mandanipour was born in 1956 in the city of Shiraz and is considered one of the most important writers of the third generation. This book consists of 9 independent short stories titled “The Violet East,” “The Night of Cypress and Fire,” “Aylār,” “Salome,” “Narbanu,” “The Guest,” “The Ancient Castle,” “A Thousand and One Nights,” and “Return to the River,” each of which takes place in a different setting. This book can be considered one of Mandanipour’s finest works. One of the distinguishing features of Mandanipour’s prose is ambiguity and encryption, which he uses to challenge the reader’s mind. Another characteristic of his works is the use of various historical, literary, and other allusions, as well as the poetic language he employs for his characters. The characters in Mandanipour’s stories are often desperate and lonely, which is why they try to save themselves by seeking refuge in love. However, it is sometimes evident that there is no means of salvation, but rather merely a kind of escape. One of the aspects that has drawn attention to this book is that in the stories, each character has their own distinct language, which changes based on their age, personality, social status, and role in the story. The loves encountered in this book all bear Eastern characteristics, where the lover ultimately descends into madness and ends up committing suicide in pursuit of their beloved.
