The Conflict of the Old and the New in Theology and Politics

Political science is the study of understanding, making specialized decisions, and implementing the best methods for individual, group, or collective interests in facing potential or emerging challenges, while political thought is the contemplation of political phenomena. The book *”The Old and the New Debate”* by Seyyed Javad Tabatabai examines the ancient and modern meanings of this thought in Western philosophy. In this book, the author attempts to analyze Western political thought from the Renaissance to the present day, which acts as an introduction to bring the topic into focus for the main issue. In reality, the main purpose of the author in *”The Old and the New Debate”* pertains to the subject of Iran — the reasons for Iran’s collapse, or why Iran fell behind Europe, and why the pace of advancement in Europe is not comparable to that of Iran. To this end, the author adopts an approach where, through a historical reading centered on the subject of Iranian political thought, he endeavors to explain how this thought declined starting from the Mongol invasion period. He also highlights the extent to which traditions remained beyond criticism and change during this era. The book *”The Old and the New Debate”* is composed of an introduction, five chapters, and a conclusion, aiming to elaborate on how comparative political thought is a highly practical and precise tool for discovering the reasons behind Iran’s lack of progress in comparison to the West.
