Farhang-e ‘Arooz is a book authored by Dr. Cyrus Shamisa, which is based on two works: “Al-Mu’jam fi Ma’ayir Ash’ar Al-‘Ajam” and “Miyar Al-Shi’ar,” written by Shams al-Din Mohammad ibn Qays Razi and Mohammad ibn Mohammad Nasir al-Din Tusi, respectively. Several researchers have attempted to highlight the similarities and differences between Persian and Arabic prosody. In such studies, Persian poetry has often been analyzed based on traditional prosody, which in such cases, can be easily mistaken for Arabic prosody. The basis of the book at hand is also set on traditional prosody and the two aforementioned works. Additionally, Dr. Cyrus Shamisa has, in later editions of this work, incorporated terms from modern prosody and terminology from the science of rhyme, which are discussed based on his book “An Introduction to Prosody and Rhyme.” Dr. Cyrus Shamisa’s “Farhang-e ‘Arooz” is among those works that have been well-received for its rigorous research methodology and the author’s scientific approach, leading to its reprints. In each revision for reprint, Dr. Cyrus Shamisa has added new content to the book, making “Farhang-e ‘Arooz” richer and more comprehensive with each edition. These additions, which the author has also addressed in the book’s preface, have enhanced the book’s merit, making it truly deserving of its title as an all-encompassing “culture of prosody,” and sufficiently meeting the needs of its readers who engage with prosody.
