Minagar of Love

Minagar of Love is a thematic commentary on the Masnavi Ma’navi by Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi (Rumi), compiled by Karim Zamani, a prominent Iranian scholar of Rumi. In “Minagar of Love,” Karim Zamani attempts to extract the interpretation of the Masnavi Ma’navi from the text itself, noting that the overall clarity emerges from the collection of Masnavi’s contents. Due to Rumi’s rapid transitions and innovative approach, the Masnavi is not arranged in the conventional chapter-by-chapter format like other works of its era. Instead, in every part of the Masnavi, discourse flows continuously, revealing one point after another. Rumi’s swift movement from one story to the next and from one metaphor to another results in readers encountering a rich array of mystical, ethical, and social insights throughout the text. It is often observed that Rumi begins a new story before concluding the previous one, creating a nested sequence of narratives and innumerable points until he expresses the essence of his discourse and returns to the main topic. This layered nature of the Masnavi’s content makes it difficult to understand. Therefore, “Minagar of Love” can be considered a preliminary exercise in comprehending the Masnavi Ma’navi, presenting hundreds of fundamental topics including anthropology, love, paradise, aesthetics, determinism and free will, Iblis, revelation, and ontology, interpreting Rumi’s views on these subjects.
