Metaphor and Allegory in Storytelling

In literary criticism, various methods have been common for years. Since the fabric of literature originates from language and linguistics is the scientific study of language, some achievements in linguistics can be an effective approach in literary criticism. Roman Jakobson, undoubtedly one of the pioneers of modern linguistics, tried to systematize the application of linguistics in literature. In defense of linguistic literary criticism in 1958, he said: “Poetics deals with the structure of speech, just as painting analysis deals with visual structure. Since linguistics is the universal science of the structure of speech, poetics should be considered a complement to linguistics.” From this perspective, the author of this volume aimed to analyze three famous works of Persian narrative literature, The Blind Owl, The Patience Stone, and Prince Ehtejab, using Jakobson’s linguistic approach.
