Iran’s Position in the New Global Energy Map

The development of a low-carbon economy is perhaps the most important issue facing the world today. The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energies is a profound change that will have extensive political-security and socio-economic consequences, and its effects cannot be avoided. Renewable energies, unlike fossil fuels, are not limited to specific geographies and are also technology-driven. If these energies develop, a new map for the geopolitics of global energy will emerge, and new players will enter the competition to provide clean energy for people who are more aware of the environmental harms of fossil energy use. Among the main losers will be producers whose oil revenues are deeply intertwined with their politics and economy and who often have single-product economies. This group will have no choice but to increase government capacity, implement structural reforms, develop infrastructure, and focus on progressive foreign relations to adapt to this transition.
