Iran and World War I

The book “Iran and the First World War,” written by Touraj Atabaki, Homa Katouzian, and other authors, is a research work with an analytical approach to the events of the First World War and how Iran entered this war. With a fresh perspective, the authors aim to examine Iranian society at that time by considering economic, social, and cultural conditions and situations to understand what happened to the people and society of Iran during the First World War. This book is organized into nine chapters with the following titles: 1. World War I, the competition of great powers, and the formation of the political society in Iran; 2. The provisional government of Iran; 3. Towards the East: Activities of the Ottoman intelligence apparatus in Iran; 4. Iranian nationalism and state gendarmerie; 5. Ismail Agha Simko, the Kurdish warlord on the Turkey-Iran border in the early 20th century; 6. Ahmad Kasravi’s account of Sheikh Mohammad Khiyabani’s uprising; 8. Pan-Turkism and Iranian nationalism; 9. International Propaganda Council and the establishment of the Communist Party of Iran. One of the important points of this book is the examination of the historical context of World War I, considering that this war and its consequences are the most significant political chapter of the 20th-century history, and Iran also experienced the events and upheavals of this occurrence. In fact, after the war began, the pressure of foreign governments increased in Iran, exacerbating the longstanding political divide. The central government of that era became fragmented and divided, leading to very short-lived cabinets such that the central government cannot be considered the sole important power in Iran at that time. The authors explain how these problems deteriorated the country’s situation and argue that the emergence of political society in contemporary Iran dates back to the constitutional movement at the beginning of the 20th century. During the constitutional revolution, the prevailing view was that the precondition for Iran’s social and political progress was the existence of a centralized and powerful government based on law and order. However, studies indicate that these considerations were not addressed, and Iranian society remained in ambiguity. Overall, the book “Iran and the First World War” addresses the issue of nationalism, Pan-Turkism, foreign governments, and their pressures on Iran’s central government, among other topics, from a fresh perspective and new angles, and is a valuable source for studying Iran’s socio-political situation during the world war.
