Fog and Smoke

Fog and Smoke is set in a cold mountainous region of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province during the 1940s. This novel narrates events in the era of Reza Shah Pahlavi and features a young boy as the main character; a teenager who achieves intellectual maturity throughout the story. The characters include a hunter, a mercenary, and a butcher who initially cooperate to reach the end of a narrow prison gorge, but ultimately their relationship descends into enmity and conflict. Themes include adventure and insights into the conditions of the 1940s, the impact of the Pahlavi regime, and how World War II affected the lives of Iranians.
