Diary of Behman Mirza Bahador al-Dawlah

The practice of publishing newspapers and daily events, especially in their current form and position, was introduced to Iran over the past two centuries as Iranian literati became familiar with European culture. Several prominent figures of the Qajar period, such as Mohammad Hassan Khan E’temad al-Saltaneh, Behman Mirza Bahador al-Dawlah, Haj Mokhber al-Saltaneh Hedayat, and Naser al-Din Shah Qajar, recorded their daily experiences in the form of diaries or memoirs. A significant part of contemporary Iranian history pertains to the Qajar era, which in the last twenty years has attracted the attention of scholars and enthusiasts of contemporary history. “Diary of Behman Mirza Bahador al-Dawlah” narrates the life events of one of the Qajar princes, who, unlike other princes, showed little interest in indulgent gatherings and spent his later years reading historical literature. The Qajar king trusted his views and he served as an advisor on various court matters, gaining insight into important affairs. The diary contains fascinating information about the inner court, including the involvement of women in political matters, contacts with the British ambassador, and disputes and quarrels between the king and courtiers. Another notable and engaging aspect of the diary is Behman Mirza’s attention to social and daily problems and his perspective on these issues. This book is the result of a unique manuscript by Behman Mirza, the thirty-sixth son of Fath Ali Shah Qajar, covering events from the early years of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar’s reign from 1270 to 1273 AH.
