Culture of Crisis

Category:

The introduction of this book states: Following the catastrophic floods of spring 2019 in Iran, particularly in the provinces of Lorestan, Ilam, Khuzestan, and Fars, and the management issues surrounding them, experts have been motivated to prioritize the topic of culture and crisis, considering the significance and role of culture in all aspects of human life. Experience has shown that strategies for dealing with natural and environmental disasters in Iran are formulated and implemented with minimal attention to cultural elements, which in turn exacerbates the severity of crises. Regarding the relationship between culture and crisis, three fundamental questions must be addressed: how to enhance the positive aspects of culture to improve the effectiveness of crisis risk management activities, how to reduce the negative cultural impacts in this area, and how to align crisis risk management strategies and actions with the cultural dimensions of society. The chapters of this book include themes such as Disaster and Culture, Mediatized Crisis, Flood: Clusters of Anger and Hope, The Illusion of Crisis as a Colonial Image during the Height of Crisis, Civil Institutions: A Way to Manage Crisis, and The Red Crescent; The Knowledge System and New Competitors.
