Awake Sleep

Mr. Kashani, a retired history teacher, had left his wife Mehrangiz about six months ago. Early in the spring, he woke her up one morning and told her that they had lived together with kindness and respect for years, but he could no longer continue living. Then he took his suitcase and left. Mehrangiz was stunned but realized that Kashani was troubled by the sorrow of being separated from their children, Babak and Parisa. Since they left, he neither went anywhere nor spoke much. For a while, Mehrangiz thought Kashani would miss her and the house, but there was still no news from him. Gradually, Mehrangiz also became listless and avoided the curious eyes of the neighbors, going to the Tajrish market for shopping. One day, she went hiking, and with each rock she passed, she felt strength and youth. She climbed up until she reached the sea, as if she had found a new life. She thought that if Kashani could see her in this vitality, perhaps he would return and instead of sitting at home, they would hike together, reach the peak, and look at the sea.
