Anonymous, written by Faryour Kharabati, a satirist and journalist, is a humorous novel that offers a perspective on social and historical issues in Iran. The book reflects intergenerational interactions, language, and lifestyle changes among Iranians in recent decades to present an impeccable narrative of this era in the future. “Anonymous” tells the story of a young man named Kaveh, who leads a double life. In reality, he is an isolated individual, unable to engage even in simple social interactions, but online, he possesses a famous and anonymous Twitter account under the name “Anonymous,” characterized by aggression, recklessness, and no red lines. The book’s title is derived from this hidden virtual identity. The main story revolves around Kaveh, from the generation of the 1970s and 1980s, meeting a book-loving girl from the 2000s generation, portraying the contradictions and generational gaps through this relationship. Kharabati frames the narrative around two significant and memorable sports events: the book begins with Iran’s historic match against Australia in 1997 and ends with Iran’s recent World Cup match against India. This framing allows the depiction of behavioral, linguistic, and cultural differences within Iranian society over time. The story is set in present-day Tehran during the tumultuous events of 2022 but transports readers to Kaveh’s family past in Langarud through multiple flashbacks. Interestingly, the author did not personally experience old Langarud but accurately reconstructed that environment using memories, photo albums, and descriptions from a relative native to the area, correctly portraying the culture, dialect, and lifestyle of the time. Kharabati, critically viewing contemporary humor, believes many comedic works sacrifice storytelling principles for mere amusement and lack coherent structure. Inspired by humorous works like Iraj Pezeshkzad’s “Uncle Napoleon,” he strives to deliver an engaging narrative in “Anonymous” where humor serves the story rather than dominating it.
